This position is funded from federal grant funds.Duties:
The Bacteriologist II will perform laboratory tests on human diagnostic specimens for evidence of respiratory pathogens using molecular techniques. Additional testing on these specimens may include targeted gene sequencing and/or pyrosequencing for antiviral resistance targets. Communicate clinical laboratory information related to respiratory pathogen surveillance. Act as surge lab testing capacity for biothreat agents, arboviruses, vaccine preventable diseases and other emerging infectious diseases such as MERS-CoV using molecular techniques. Perform RT-PCR to detect presence of respiratory pathogens, biothreat agents, arboviruses, vaccine preventable diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and other emerging infectious diseases such as MERS-CoV. Communicate clinical laboratory information related to viral and bacterial pathogens important in respiratory surveillance activities specific to the public health laboratory system. Support laboratory-specific surveillance efforts in coordination with the vaccine preventable disease epidemologists via the CDC-s National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS). Enter test results into computer databases and prepare weekly reports. Receive and process clinical samples from emerging infectious diseases such as MERS-CoV within a BSL 3 laboratory. Ensure the laboratory areas and reagents are contamination-free. Perform additional duties as required such as quality control, evaluation of laboratory equipment to determine need for repair and replacement, disposal of hazardous waste, and maintenance of frozen specimen collection. Provide surge testing support to the laboratory section. Will be required to attend weekly meetings in support of vaccine preventable disease program activities related to influenza and other non-influenza respiratory pathogens. May utilize tissue culture techniques to isolate viruses. May perform immunologic tests, such as EIA and IFA, to detect viruses.
Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or paraprofessional experience in bacteriology, biology or biochemistry work and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in bacteriology, biology, chemistry or biochemistry may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.
II. A Graduate degree with a major in bacteriology, biology, chemistry or biochemistry may be substituted for the required experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of microbiology. Knowledge of the practices, techniques and tests relative to a biological or bacteriological laboratory. Knowledge of the proper methods for disposing of contaminated laboratory materials. Knowledge of the types and uses of sterilization equipment and devices used in laboratory. Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in a biological or bacteriological laboratory. Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in a biological or bacteriological laboratory. Knowledge of general laboratory testing procedures including sample collection. Knowledge of the techniques for handling and transportation of specimens. Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with others. Ability to prepare accurate technical reports. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral expression. Ability to supervise.
Comments:
Must meet CLIA requirements for high compleity testing. Willingness to work under conditions of potential exposure to infectious agents. Must be willing to sign a confidentiality statement.
All Tier 1 designated staff who may be exposed to a Tier 1 Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) must complete OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire (29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix C) and be evaluated and to wear a respirator before working in any HSLI laboratory ( Tier 1, non Tier1and non SAT) that requires a respirator.
