GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Under general supervision, performs specialized techniques for immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence studies. Immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence testing is primarily done on paraffin-embedded and frozen surgical specimens, as well as fluids or fine needle aspirations, using many different antisera. Embeds and sections of routine tissue and IHC/IF positive control tissue with microtome or Cryostat machine. Performs routine H & E stains, coverslips slides, and accurately labels slides. Responsible for sign in and sign out of clinical slides for IHC/IF studies. Records work in laboratory daily work log and in hospital computer with a high level of accuracy. Maintains laboratory equipment and makes all working solutions. Identifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior staff. Assists in the orientation and training of new laboratory staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received. Ensures correct patient labeling of all materials received.
1, Performs routine immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence studies with appropriate controls for cell markers on paraffin sections using a variety of both monoclonal, polyclonal and fluorescence conjugated antibodies with wide variety of specialized technique.
2, Embeds processed tissue in paraffin and freeze fresh tissue with OCT, sections paraffin blocks and frozen tissue, performs H&E staining, Coverslips prepared slides manually or utilizes automated coverslipping systems
3, Prepares all reagents, buffers and stains utilized in laboratory and maintain acceptable working volumes.
4, Organizes slides for distribution to residents, fellows and/or senior pathologists according to requisition paperwork and worksheets.
5, Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment. Verifies that all QA/QC has been done.
6, Maintains inventory of a large number of reagents and other supplies in Lab. Follows established protocols for proper storage and maintenance of quality control for all reagents and other supplies.
7, Maintains equipment in proper working order and obtains maintenance as necessary.
8, Identifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior laboratory staff. Troubleshoots under supervision.
9, Assists in safety training of all laboratory personnel. This includes maintaining appropriate documentation and protocols.
10, Assists in the orienting and training of new laboratory staff.
11, Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.
12, Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
13, Follows all JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital policies.
14, Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.
Qualifications:
(MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
Must possess a minimum of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a biological/physical science or equivalent, with courses in immunology and histology or equivalent training. Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired. Computer skills highly desired.
Other qualification as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1351 -1495.
One year of experience as a histology technician preferred.
HT (ASCP) certification eligible.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
(MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
Must demonstrate the ability to embed, section, and stain on frozen and processed tissue with acceptable quantity and quality.
Knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology (preferable for optimal function, though lab is highly specialized), mathematics, and basic computer use.
Must have excellent organizational skills to cope with an extremely busy work schedule associated with wide variety of techniques which must be handled accurately and expeditiously.
Must function independently in dealing with specimens and their proper handling.
On own initiative, ability to identify potential problems and trouble shoot problems as necessary.
Good interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers and department staff.
Ability to work under general supervision.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
