Job-Specific Responsibilities Harvard Medical School is home to world-class faculty who aim to solve the greatest problems of human health through fundamental and translational biomedical research. The HMS Department of Information Technology, a key partner in supporting computation-based research for the school, has an exciting opportunity for an API-focused DevOps Engineer to support the central mission of the Institute. The position, reporting to the Senior Director of the DevOps team, is tasked with building modern application endpoints for new and existing systems to aid integration with internal and external groups within the wider University. The successful engineer will act as the subject matter expert for development resources on and off-campus needing to tie into DevOps managed resources. This may include application integrations, monitoring, and reporting, functional expansion, or new datapaths not yet designed. As a member of the DevOps team, this position has a strategic focus to assist in the design of future systems to ensure interoperability and adherence to open standards whenever possible. Additional job responsibilities include, but are not limited to large-scale system automation, reusable across University departments, investigating, evaluating, and implementing the latest development technologies as needed to meet shifting research goals and to support the school and University mission. This position has a focus on introducing technologies that serve as a stable backbone of future services of benefit to the HMS community while serving as the subject matter expert for HMS researchers and faculty who need to take advantage of the latest industry standards and technology. The API / Integration DevOps Engineer will play a leading role in modernizing and maintaining existing systems as well as acting as a mentor and resource for other team members. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Develop/build modern infrastructure and systems to leverage existing and new technology Architect systems in an open and transparent way to provide secure and reliable access to the HMS community Analyze existing systems and related data to support initiatives and ongoing system implementations Work collaboratively with other team members and departments to evaluate new system needs and data sources for adherence to the School's security, confidentiality, and privacy policies In conjunction with principal users and data owners, provide leadership in decision-making around system design and implementation Work within a diverse team to develop new service offerings and extend existing infrastructure Participate in an on-call rotation Other duties as assigned The below Typical Core Duties are a generalized list provided by Harvard's Job Frameworks, and may not actually reflect the job-specific responsibilities of this position. Typical Core Duties Participate fully in software development life cycle Research, design, and implement technical solutions to deliver business requirements Identify opportunities to improve and simplify applications portfolio and implement related enhancements Contribute to creation and maturing of software development best practices and new technologies Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients and to mentor junior staff Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct Basic Qualifications Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience Additional Qualifications and Skills A bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline, such as mathematics, computer science or engineering, and 4
years of experience in the fields of software development and/or DevOps/Systems Administration. Additional experience will be considered in lieu of formal education Development experience in at least two high-level languages ( Python, perl, Ruby, Bash, etc ) Development experience with at least one low-level language (C, C++, Go, Rust, etc ) Firm understanding of API and Library design best practices Experience evaluating and deploying open-source tools Source management systems (git/mercurial/svn) Automation and configuration management (puppet/Ansible) Mid-level NIX/Linux system administration (Red Hat/Debian variants) Firm understanding of NIX/Linux and application debugging Relational and nosql databases Application load balancing solutions for scaling and HA Medical Informatics or Healthcare data experience Protected data, HIPAA, Health Information Privacy experience Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation; NGS, Microscopy, Mass Spectrometry, etc.
Salary Range:
$100K -- $150K
Minimum Qualification
DevOps & Site ReliabilityEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
