Senior Biostatistician, Center for Surgery and Public Health

Established in 2005 as a joint initiative of Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), CSPH's (Center for Surgery and Public Health) mission is to advance the science of surgical care delivery by studying effectiveness, equity, and value at the health system and population levels, to inform policy, and to provide support for faculty and trainees committed to excellence in surgical health services research (HSR).
CSPH's expertise in HSR also informs its work in addressing the burden of surgical disease in lower and middle-income countries and resource-limited settings.
GENERAL SUMMARYWe are seeking a master's-level biostatistician with at least 5 years of professional experience who can provide mentorship for early career biostatisticians.
The biostatistician manages, coordinates, and performs data and programming-related activities for health services research studies examining the science of surgical care delivery.
Functioning very independently and under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, performs complex statistical analyses of health services data often involving cleaning and merging of large administrative datasets.
May identify, develop, and implement new computational techniques.
Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, applies, researches, and develops statistical models for analysis, inference, and prediction from a variety of large databases.
Responsible for the transfer of data from the data management company, cleaning and merging the data into workable data sets.
Interacts with other collaborators to merge the primary dataset with other data sources.
Assures that projects are proceeding according to plan and helps develop recording systems assuring the flow of data is tracked in an accurate and timely fashion.
Designs and performs analyses.
Writes complex programs using SAS, as well as other statistical and analytical software packages.
Meets with study investigators regularly to review the execution of study design and data collection performs interim statistical analysis.
In collaboration with investigators and trainees, contributes to scientific literature, reports, journals, and presentations.
Assists in orientation and training of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and other personnel as needed.
Performs other duties and responsibilities at the supervisor's request.
QUALIFICATIONSA master's degree, such as an MS in statistics, biostatistics, public health (with quantitative focus) or an equivalent degree is required.
Candidates with a PhD or doctoral degree in a relevant field may also apply.
At least 5 years of specifically related work experience research experience in analysis Complex health services-related datasets.
Experience with large databases analyses and claims data is essential.
Experience with hospital patient information data, such as EPIC, is preferred.
Excellent knowledge of SAS programming and statistical analyses.
Statistical software such as STATA or R are a plus.
Experience with developing and reporting clinical research project plans, specifications, schedules, and technical parameters to management.
Must be deadline oriented.
Demonstrated statistical/analytical and reasoning skills to perform high level problem solving.
Has thorough understanding of analysis, coding, testing and project methodologies.
High level of confidentiality must be maintained.
Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Strong theoretical statistical background and data analysis skills.
Substantial experience applying sophisticated statistical methods to analyze complex datasets.
Solid data analysis programming skills using SAS, STATA and/or R.
Excellent time management/organizational skills.
Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team setting.
High degree of initiative and ability to persevere on challenging research problems.
Willingness to seek and accept guidance from senior personnel, as needed.
