OverviewThe Laboratory Safety (LS) Group is based in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) at Tufts University.
The OVPR provides the key services necessary to deliver exceptional results in research.
The Laboratory Safety (LS) Group supports research and teaching activities by providing training, advice and other compliance assistance in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, and general lab safety.
The Chemical Safety Officer will report to the Assistant Director Lab Safety and will serve as a field expert for the LS Group at the University.
What You'll DoThe Chemical Safety Officer (CSO) provides advice and technical services in the discipline of chemical safety for the faculty, staff, students, visitors, contractors, and regulatory agents performing work in or impacting teaching, education, and training laboratories.
This is accomplished by remaining current on regulatory requirements, performing hazard assessments, conducting audits, and providing training and guidance.
The CSO partners with the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), Laboratory Safety Support, Officers (LSSO), and Institutional Chemical Safety Committee (ICSC) at the University to promote a safe work environment on the storage, use, and disposal of chemicals.
Responsibilities include:
Supports the Chemical Safety Program by conducting audits focused on chemical safety and ensures chemical inventories are current, provides recommendations and education, and monitors action itemsManages the online chemical inventory program by working with SciSheildProvides training, develops guidance material for users and generates reports on chemical use and storageReviews protocols, standard operating procedures, and chemical registrations to ensure the use (including personal protective equipment), labeling, storage, disposal, spill cleanup, and decontamination of chemicalsAssists lab staff by providing guidance and responding to questions and requestsParticipates in ICSC meetings, provides guidance, develops and implements chemical policies, and provides information on accident/incidents, chemical inventory compliance, and chemical audit findings for the committee's reviewInvestigates reports of chemical hazard incidents, chemical spills, and near-misses to prevent repeat occurrences; presents information to the ICSC What We're Looking ForBasic Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, one of the life sciences, or related disciplineA minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory or related industry (chemical manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, research laboratory, etc.
).
Experience in Chemical Hygiene/lab safety strongly preferredExcellent written and oral communication skillsMust be familiar with standard laboratory procedures and operations in order to converse with researchers and provide relevant guidanceProficiency with computers, Microsoft Office and standard office softwareAble to travel between campusesPreferred
Qualifications:
Relevant certifications (e.

00 Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
