Overview:
What is Practice Development at Ropes & Gray? Practice Development plays an essential role in the firm's business, where our core business units are practice groups (PGs).
Practice Development professionals, working in teams, are embedded within each PG and focus on driving and implementing firm and PG strategic priorities, where we serve as trusted advisers to the partners and firm leadership.
We are also key advisors on behalf of PGs to other business support departments at the firm.
Each Practice Development team stands in a unique position, working closely with partners, to develop and execute on a wide range of strategic, commercial, and operational initiatives - connecting people and capabilities - that include:
Contributing to and overseeing the articulation and implementation of the PG's strategic and commercial priorities.
Managing and overseeing the core business functions of each practice group.
Focusing PG talent and its alignment with firm and PG needs to drive strategies and offerings.
Commercializing knowledge through product development, thought leadership campaigns, and external, as well as internal, profile-raising strategies.
Focusing on PG performance metrics to identify actionable insights and measure practice imperatives.

Summary:
The Practice Development Specialist (PDS) will serve as a trusted advisor to the Practice Development Manager (PDM) and other practice development team members in support of the Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), Specialty Group Leaders (SGLs) and partners in the Strategic Transactions group.
The PDS, in coordination with the PDMs, will act as an advisor and liaison on behalf of their practice group with other practices, attorneys and business support departments at the firm.
The PDS will work directly with the PDM to support the implementation of the overall strategy, may work with partners to drive pieces of the strategy, and ensure the operational efficiency within the assigned practice group.
In this role, the PDS will report to the PDM and work closely with other departments (e.
g.
, Business Development, Finance, Marketing, Knowledge Management, Attorney Development, etc.
) to support elements of the practice's strategic vision, business operations, financial profitability, resource management, and goals of the Strategic Transactions group.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a large law firm or other professional services environment; exceptional project management abilities; strong organizational and communication (both verbal and written) skills and attention to detail; innate bias to take initiative; can-do attitude; demonstrated ability to use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.
Essential Functions:
Work alongside PDM and practice group leadership to support development and implementation of strategic group plan.
Manage select work streams and initiatives in support of the strategy and practice priorities.
Support daily operations of the assigned practice group, including the preparation and design of (and in certain cases, managing) PG substantive meetings that maintain focus on PG priorities.
Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and efficiency in business operations, matter management, infrastructure and methodologies.
Work with PDM to develop solutions and plans for corresponding actions.
Assist PDM, SGLs and PGLs with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice groups, including preparation and execution of integration plans and tracking onboarding progress.
Working with the Public Relations, Communications and Events teams, support planning of external marketing opportunities that raise the profile of the practice and partners, including identification of speaking opportunities, conferences, sponsorships, and writing opportunities to enhance knowledge marketing efforts.
Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions in collaboration with the Public Relations/ Marketing Communications team; work with PDM and PGLs to determine rankings strategy for each submission, draft and finalize submissions accordingly.
In coordination with PDM, collaborate with Finance colleagues to analyze practice group performance metrics and identify actionable themes that support the growth and goals of the practice.
Support preparation and tracking of practice group budgets.
Monitor trends and market developments relevant to the Strategic Transactions group; share relevant developments with key stakeholders.
Act as a mentor to junior team members.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
An undergraduate degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in a law firm, professional services firm or other corporate environment.
Goal-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative working style.
Excellent oral communication and business writing skills, and attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and bring to bear the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm's lawyers and professional staff in a multi-office environment.
Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including ability to develop project plans and set deadlines to meet business objectives, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to anticipate, identify and solve problems, work independently, take initiative and make decisions using sound judgment.
Ability to compile, review, analyze and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information that is varied in context, content and format.
Ability to contribute to the training and supervision of entry level team members.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment and schedule (currently at least 3 days onsite per week and beginning in November at least 4 days onsite per week).
This is a non-exempt position; candidate must be willing and able to handle overtime as needed.
