Research & Design Engineer

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Will beresponsible for design and fabrication of optical systems developed by theTearney research group in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Participate asa member of a research and development team to develop pre-clinical or clinicalsystems and devices. May lead or participate in the development of optical design,electronic board design, hardware and software design. Ensure that devicetesting is preformed and system documentation is completed. Educate medical andother technical personnel at the level of basic theory of system operation andincluding development of educational programs. Lead quality improvementactivities, suggests innovative solutions to technical problems. May lead ateam comprised of other engineers or technicians.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Note:The term medical equipment may be either or all of electronic, mechanical andcomputer-based technologies for use in clinical or research applications.
1. Design, fabrication and testing of optical andopto-mechanical systems; detectors and electrical circuits.
2. Develop and implement data acquisition, instrumentcontrol, and user interface software.
3. Provide technical support for existing optical imaginginstruments.
4. Provide supporting technical documentation for opticalsystems, devices and subsystems.
5. Ensure that clinical devices assigned to team receive appropriatesafety and functional testing, preventive maintenance and service; assure thequality and timeliness of repair and testing of equipment and assure thethoroughness, accuracy and organization of service records.
6. Assist in capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets.
7. Develop protocols and procedures for the use, maintenance, andtesting of equipment.
8. Manage and participate in educational programs for clinical andtechnical staff including to level of engineering theory.
9. Evaluate safety and efficacy of medical devices. Investigatecost-effectiveness of alternatives to current technologies.
10. Maintain knowledge of and advise hospital personnel of codes andregulations regarding clinical devices and support facilities.
11. Perform other related duties as required.

Maymanage or supervise other technical.
FISCAL
Responsibilities:
1. May manageportions of operational and/or capital budget
2. Preparecapital and/or operational budgets for approval by department leadership
3. Ensureaccurate preparation and documentation of service and purchase requisitionswithin sphere of responsibility
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Skill in management of engineeringprojects and/or personnel
2. Ability towork in an interdisciplinary team of scientist, engineers and medical doctors
3. Ability todiagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity
4. Knowledge ofoptical, electronic, mechanical and/or computer engineering design andapplications' principles
5. Computerliteracy to the level of at least word processing, spreadsheets, databases,graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming
6. Demonstratedexpertise in Matlab, LabView, image processing and optical design software
6. Humanrelations and interpersonal skills of a level as necessary to interact with aresearch team in a complex environment under general direction.
7. Skill intechnical writing
8. Skill intechnical presentation and teaching
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Maywork in research laboratory or clinical site with potential exposure tobiological agents, e.g., blood-borne pathogens, hazardous electrical, e.g.,high voltage, or mechanical energy. Occasional lifting of heavy objects,typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person may be requested. MGH policiesgoverning appropriate laboratory attire will be followed including use ofpersonal protective equipment.
Qualifications:
1. BS in Engineeringrequired
2. MS in Biomedical,Electrical Engineering or closely related field strongly preferred
3. 3 years of engineeringexperience required
4. Experience in medicalengineering in a hospital, industry or academic setting
