Located in a city known for its rich technology and innovative leadership, our Boston Research Center sits adjacent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The center conducts research in computational reservoir modeling and nanotechnology and develops advanced materials science and separation technology systems.
Basic Function
Develop and direct research and development programs of advanced materials and nano-enabled technologies for applications in the downstream oil and gas industry. Apply rigorous scientific and engineering expertise in advanced materials synthesis, processing, and characterization to an interdisciplinary team focused on solving complex technical challenges. Help to implement team strategy, communicate regular updates to upper management, expand collaborations with academic and industrial partners, and provide technical guidance to the advanced materials research team for materials-related projects and collaborations. Review, coordinate, and manage the work performed by others. Incumbent will provide high level of professional expertise in their area of specialization to resolve complex problems.
Duties & Responsibilities
Develop and direct applied research in the application and utilization of advanced materials to technical challenges in downstream oil and gas
Specify, manage, and conduct research on materials synthesis and processing, as well as on characterization using spectroscopic, thermal, microscopic, and rheological methods
Write, review, and assess multi-year proposals to expand into new materials research and technology areas
Assist in building and expanding partnership with internal staff and external collaborators on new and existing programs
Communicate results to staff, management, and the scientific community
Protect intellectual property
Apply and reinforce all safety policies in the workplace
Carry out original investigative applied industrial research studies to resolve complex and unique technical problems for which relevant published literature is lacking
Conduct information seminars and technical presentations in areas of his/her principal expertise
May provide work direction to a team of lab scientists and technicians
Keep current on new developments in field of expertise; actively participate in work of technical societies (e.g. AIChE, ACS, MRS)
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Education and Experience
M.S. Degree in a Science/Engineering Discipline required; PhD. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field preferred
Sixteen (16) years of professional experience including at least five (5) years as a specialist with full responsibility for major technical work in area of specialization required
Ten (10) to fifteen (15) years post-graduate industrial and/or academic experience in several relevant technical areas preferred, including nanomaterial processing, functionalization, formulation, and characterization
Must have in-depth knowledge of advanced materials and/or nanomaterials
Materials development and commercialization in membrane science and/or heterogeneous catalysis a plus
Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members, direct reports, external collaborators, and the scientific community
Strong desire to expand and develop new and innovative applied research and development programs
Experience in supervising the technical contributions of others, experience managing interdisciplinary teams of 10
scientists and engineers required; management of global teams a strong plus
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences
Proven ability to create and successfully implement complex technical strategies involving internal resources and external collaborators
Incumbent will have achieved substantial industry recognition in his/her area of expertise
Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly, and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
