Overview
Principle Functions
The main function of the Education Manager is accountability for the academic, social-emotional growth and development of all children in their care. Assuring compliance with codes of all State and local governing contract agencies. The development and day-to-day operations of the education center, tutoring, mentoring, after school educational programs, performing arts programs, and classroom facilities. Direct an in-house after-school/day camp program.

Duties and Responsibilities
Design programs; Philosophy, development of policies, procedures and evaluation of after-school/day camp by representing the Salvation Army's spiritual ministry and social mission.
Develop and implement education programs that meet the demonstrated needs of the community and fit within the scope (budget) and strategy of education program goals.
Assure program manager, staff and families are surveyed on an annual basis in order to evaluate the programs and develop an improvement plan.
Supervise and oversee the day-to-day operations of the after school program/day camp programs; schedule, direct, and guide all public, private, and in-house activities within the Education department.
Conduct interviews recommend for hire all after-school/day camp staff positions.
Must complete Day Camp Staff Orientation.
Instruct or coordinate instructors for all sessions taking place within the Education department including computer literacy and skills training courses, adult education, programs for children and parents and family programming, such as family literacy night.
Attend all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings; conduct weekly staff meetings to review plans, guidelines and any challenges faced.
Ensure that instructors and staff within the education department maintain appropriate certification by the appropriate certifying body.
Supply information as required for grant proposals including statistics, program narratives and other pertinent information.
Ensure and document that standards are met according to grants received and other forms of collaborative partnership according to signed agreements and/or contracts.
Establish working objectives for volunteers that will assist in the education area. Work closely with the Membership, Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator on the scheduling and specific duties for volunteers. Report any concerns or issues regarding volunteers to the Chief Operations ExecutiveEvents and Volunteer Coordinator.
Ensure a safe, enjoyable and professional operation by supporting and enforcing the rules and regulations of The Salvation Army Boston Kroc.
Ensure an adequate reserve of program supplies; conduct regular inventory of all equipment and supplies.
Ensure customer service standards are met; improved upon issues that arise with direct follow-up with unsatisfied members and/or guests.
Ensure daily reports, participation statistics, bi-weekly payroll reports, financial transactions, lost and found items, annual reports, budget and annual area goals and objectives are reviewed and completed according to agreed upon timeline.
Develop systems that safeguard any and all facilities, supplies and equipment related to the Education Program of The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center.
Provide input and budget projections to The Salvation Army Kroc Center Administrator and Accounting Manager relative to budget needs and budget preparation for the education department.
Review monthly budget comparisons for a global view of the fiscal matters of your section and share rationale with supervisor. Be accountable for monitoring spending, to stay within the approved budget.
Bill contract agencies; remain informed about current fees owed to The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center to avoid excessive debts.
Assist in the writing and maintaining of job descriptions as required.
Recruit, train, schedule, evaluate and directly supervise education staff.
Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participants. This will include the writing of internal memos, schedules, flyers, website & social networking content, newsletters and one-on-one discussions.
Maintain parental communication and relations including outreach and enrollment
Develop relationship with families and community to promote programs and fill open slots.
Assume Manager on Duty (MOD) responsibilities when scheduled.
Drive program van as needed for field trips and daily pick-up, etc.
Represent The Salvation Army's spiritual ministry and social mission in the Day Camp program.
Engage in Christian spiritual conversation with members of the public and in The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center if the opportunity or need presents itself.
Recognize spiritual need of persons which may require referral to the Corps Officers or Kroc Administrators.
Perform other related duties as assigned by your supervisor and Administrators.
SUPERVISORY
Responsibilities:
Directly supervises the education staff as outlined in the organization chart that may be updated and reassigned as needed. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
In accordance to the organizations policies and procedures responsibilities include interviewing (and making recommendations) to The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Administrator(s), training employee(s); planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employee(s); addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Review job description(s) annually to see what changes may be needed as the Center advances and make recommendations to The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Administrator(s) on revision.
Delegate responsibilities to staff as needed.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
Bachelor degree (Master's degree preferred) in a field related to education.
Department of Early Education and Care Teacher Certification.
Work Experience
Must have five years of progressive leadership experience in education. Classroom teaching and/or educational administration experience is required.
Must have at least three years experience in developing, planning, managing and supervising education programs.
Must have at least three years experience developing and administering budgets for education programs.
Other Qualifications
Must have the ability and experience to write grants to raise money for The Salvation Army's after-school program and summer camp.
The ability to conduct workshops on a variety of education related topics.
Must have or acquire within the first 30 days of employment a First Aid & CPR certification.
Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the Center and The Salvation Army.
Have the ability to supervise a professional staff consisting of individuals with varying experience, competency and cultural backgrounds.
Have excellent computer skills and competency with software such as Microsoft Office Applications and/or appropriate desktop applications and hardware such as computers, printers, projectors and smart boards.
Specialized training in child development and curriculum implementation.
Must have the ability to work and relate well with people.
Possession of a valid state driver's License.
High level of confidentiality, discretion and judgment.
Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
May be required to work evenings and some weekends.
